How long can you continuously take the pill for

You can continue to take the hormone pills for as long as you like. Some people like to take the hormone pills for a few months at a time, and then take the inactive pills to get a period, before going back to the hormone pills. There are no side effects to not having a period. The longer you take the pill, the thinner the lining of the uterus becomes.

The monthly period you have while on the pill is not proof that you are not pregnant. The only way you can know whether you are pregnant is to take a pregnancy test. When the pill was first invented, the creators thought people would find it more natural to have a period each month and created the inactive pills to give people a monthly bleed.

The Combined Oral Contraceptive pills available in New Zealand contain two hormones: oestrogen and progestogen. Oestrogen is what causes the lining of the uterus to thicken, progestogen stops ovulation happening. When you stop taking the hormone pills and in particular, the oestrogen , the lining of the uterus starts to shed, meaning you bleed and have your period.

As soon as you stop taking the pill, your fertility will return to normal. But the professional body behind the guidelines that prompted the news reports says their recommendations have been misinterpreted. Women should still talk to their doctors about what method of contraceptive is best for them.

The combined oral contraceptive pill - usually just called "the pill" - contains hormones that can prevent pregnancy by stopping the user from releasing any eggs from her ovaries.

There are lots of different brands but the most commonly-taken packs contain 21 tablets - one to be taken each day for three weeks, with a seven day pill-free period at the end of the month when a woman will usually bleed. Some women can't take contraception that contains oestrogen and instead take the progesterone-only pill - also known as "the mini pill".

The pill only works well as a contraceptive if you remember to take it as recommended. You've "missed a pill" if you take it more than 24 hours later than your chosen time. This is different for the progesterone-only pill. Follow the instructions for your own medication. Some brands contain 28 tablets - 21 real ones and seven inactive ones - to make it easier for women, meaning there is no break between packets of pills, although they will still probably have some bleeding each month.

The FSRH says some women could take packets of 21 pills continuously, dropping the seven-day break entirely. Their recommendations, which are intended to guide healthcare professionals prescribing to women, say there is no health benefit from the seven-day pill break and some women can safely take fewer or no breaks to avoid monthly bleeds and cramps.

It might make it easier for women to take them without forgetting a pill and reduce the risk of unwanted pregnancy, they say. When you stop taking the hormone pills and in particular, the oestrogen , the lining of the uterus starts to shed, meaning you bleed and have your period.

As soon as you stop taking the pill, your fertility will return to normal. There is no difference to your fertility, whether you take the pill continuously, or normally.

It is safe to take the pill for as many years as you like, either using the regular method, or the continuous method. The side effects from taking the pill continuously are the same as taking the pill in the regular way. Serious side effects are rare, but important to be aware of.
